DANB Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) Practice Test

The correct answer is based on infection control protocols in dentistry, which emphasize the importance of maintaining sterile conditions for instruments that come into contact with oral tissues. Dental handpieces, due to their frequent use and potential for contamination, are recommended to be sterilized at regular intervals to prevent the transmission of pathogens.

The recommended maximum time of 60 minutes for using a dental handpiece between sterilization cycles ensures that any risk of cross-contamination is minimized. This time frame takes into account the amount of use and the likelihood of generating aerosols or other contaminants during treatment. Adhering to this time limit supports the overall safety and health of both patients and dental professionals in the clinical setting.

Shorter intervals might be too restrictive and could interfere with workflow, while longer intervals might increase the risk of infection. Thus, 60 minutes strikes a balance between operational efficiency and maintaining rigorous infection control standards, making it the appropriate choice.
